Three approaches, one goal
Many people want exposure to trading without placing every trade themselves. There are three common ways to do this, and they differ in who makes decisions, how much control you keep, and how transparent the process is.
Copy trading
You choose a specific trader to mirror. Every trade they place is replicated in your account, scaled to your allocation.
- •Who decides: A human trader you select.
- •Your control: High. You can stop, pause, adjust allocation, or close copied positions at any time.
- •Transparency: Good, if the trader is verified on a third party like Myfxbook. You can see their full trade history.
- •Main risk: The trader's future decisions may not match their past performance.
Algo (algorithmic) trading
A computer program follows a defined set of rules to enter and exit trades automatically. The rules are written in advance and tested, often on historical data.
- •Who decides: A pre-written algorithm. No human judgement during live trading.
- •Your control: Medium. You choose which algorithm to run and set its parameters, but you do not approve individual trades.
- •Transparency: The rules are fixed and knowable, but you need technical understanding to evaluate them.
- •Main risk: Algorithms can fail when market conditions differ from their tested period. They can also malfunction technically. Monitoring is essential.
Managed accounts
You give a professional trader or firm authority to trade your account on your behalf, typically under a formal agreement.
- •Who decides: A professional manager or firm, under a mandate you agree to.
- •Your control: Lower. You set the mandate, but day-to-day decisions are delegated.
- •Transparency: Varies. Properly regulated managers provide regular statements, but you may not see every trade in real time.
- •Main risk: You are relying on the manager's skill and honesty. Only use managers authorised by a recognised financial regulator, and verify that authorisation independently.
Which is right for you?
| Feature | Copy trading | Algo trading | Managed account | |---|---|---|---| | Day-to-day control | High | Medium | Lower | | Human judgement | Yes | No | Yes | | Setup effort | Low | Medium | Medium | | Real-time trade visibility | Yes | Yes | Varies |
There is no single best option. Some people combine approaches — for example, copying a human trader for discretion and running a tested algorithm for systematic exposure. Whatever you choose, start with money you can afford to lose, read the risk disclosure, and verify any performance claims on a third party before you commit.
